Project #70694 - Bid if u think u can get an A for me !!!!

The Great Gatsby is "built" around a central mystery:  Jay Gatsby, who he is, how he gets his money, why he does what he does, and what he really wants.  Here's a quote:  "The truth was that Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his own Platonic conception of himself" (104).  “Platonic” here means, in a word, ideal, which is to say that Jay Gatsby is an invention of James Gatz’s own mind.  This suggests “positive thinking” in the sense that Barbara Ehrenreich gives the term in Bright-Sided—a “cognitive stance, a conscious expectation, that presumably anyone can develop through practice” (4).

For your essay, I want you to explore the nature and implications of this mystery Jay Gatsby symbolizes in relation to the notion of “positive thinking.”  Analyze the term in Bright-Sided, establishing its meaning with quotes from the book—for instance, as a power of “mind over matter.”  Then focus on the novel, using two or more quotes that support your reading of this "mystery."  Your interpretations of these quotes, or examples, should illustrate your understanding of how that mystery unfolds through the story.  Be sure to relate what happens there to a larger American experience.  How is Gatsby “representative” of America, of some aspect of our national character?  What does his story tell us about the American “Dream”?  How is this “Dream” related to “positive thinking”?

The assignment should be 4-5 typed and double-spaced pages.
