Part A – Moon Sports

 

In this part of the assignment you are to investigate the reasonableness of playing the track and field events of javelin and long jump on the moon.

 

Question 1

Experts recommend a release angle of 35 degrees for javelin throwing, use this as the release angle. Determine what the length of the equivalent throw on the moon would be. Clearly communicate the procedure you followed, and fully justify your answer.

 

Question 2

Recent top women's long jump distances are around 7.5m. The graph below shows the speed athletes are able to achieve for different takeoff angles. Use this graph to estimate the optimum takeoff angle and related speed. Athletics Australia suggests that the landing pit start at most 1m from the take off board, and finish at least 10m from the take off board. Determine appropriate lengths of landing pits required on the moon. Fully justify your answer.

Question 3

Reflect on the appropriateness of hosting these track and field events on the moon. Suggest strategies to make the events similar to those held on earth. Support your response mathematically.


Part B – Modelling Sports

 

Question 4

The following image was created by taking a photo of a bouncing ping-pong ball (table tennis ball). Assume the photos were taken at the rate of 25 photos per second. Using a suitable modelling tool determine the equation that describes the motion. Discuss reason for needing to modify the model used for the standard model of particle motion.

 

 

 

 

Question 5

 

Design a new athletic event for the first “Moon Olympics”. The event will be a throwing event to replace discuss and shot-put. The measurement to maximise for this event will be the height of the “throw”. Consider the weight and throwing technique used to account for reduced gravity. Justify the key aspects of the event mathematically.
