Project #70967 - bio essay

What is your carbon footprint?

The problem:

Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don’t keep reducing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2)   and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere.  But what can we do about it as individuals?

The average U.S. household produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing normal things like turning on the air-conditioning or driving the car.  This is about five times the world average!  So how much should we reduce our carbon emissions?  Some experts say that to prevent global disaster we need to reduce CO2 emissions by 80 percent.  Can we do that?

The experiment:

1.  Calculate your current personal carbon footprint by collecting data about your lifestyle.  Print off the attached data sheet and fill in the information.

2.  Once you complete the attached data prep sheet go to the website:

http://footprint.stanford.edu/calculate.html

3.  Plug in your data and calculate your personal carbon footprint.

4.  Submit  your results page to the drop box.

5.  After completing the calculations answer the questions on the following worksheet.
