Project #71647 - Geography

In 5-6 paragraphs, explain the geographical origins of a particular fruit, vegetable or foodstuff, its history and migration / conversion to current day use. Use the story of the potato and tomato as your model. It is acceptable to discuss further processing of a foodstuff (such as the creation of tomato sauce) or the suitability of a geographic location (such as growing wine grapes in California) in the explanation of the food migration.

As examples,

1) Consider that the Irish did not have the potato at the time of St. Patrick. The potato was 'found' in Peru after the time of Columbus' discovery of the New World.

2) Likewise, the Italians did not have tomato sauce in the time of Julius Caesar. The tomato originated in Mexico and was brought to Europe, again after Columbus' trips to America.

3) A more modern example is the lowly pizza pie. Originally, the pizza was found in the "Mezzogiorno" region of Italy, and gradually made its way to America during the late 1890s to the early 1900s immigration boom. Consider the how and why of its popularity and large geographic presence today.
