I need help on a mathematical modeling assignment. Here is the assignment again MAT-351: MATHEMATICAL MODELING Midterm Project You are required to complete a midterm project instead of taking a proctored midterm exam. This project will focus on the concepts covered in Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of your textbook. You are required to submit a written report addressing one of the following modeling problems (Pick ONLY ONE). Please consult the Course Calendar for the due date for the midterm project. Project 1 In Chapter 2, we estimate the slope of proportionality line using the two point method. We will use the following project to illustrate the use of proportionality models Proportionality/Geometric Similarity Modeling 1. PURPOSE: To develop proportionality arguments and test them using technology. 2. OBJECTIVE: Determine if the hearts of mammals are geometrically similar using your knowledge of proportionality models and technology. Provide a summary of your analysis using the following data to support or refute your argument. Animal Heart Weight ( in grams) Length of cavity of left ventricle (in) Mouse 0.13 0.55 Rat 0.64 1.00 Rabbit 5.8 2.2 Dog 102.00 4.00 Sheep 210.00 6.5 Ox 2030.00 12.00 Horse 3900.00 16.00 3. PROCEDURE: ● a. Develop the proportionality model relating heart weight (HW) to the length (L) of the cavity of the left ventricle. You should get HW µ L3. ● b. Test the proportionality model using the data provided. Testing a proportionality model often involves the following steps: 1. Enter the raw observed data into your calculator and computer. 2. Plot the raw data to check for smoothness and potential "outliers", and to give you a "feel" of the type of proportionality you might find. 3. Make any necessary transformations to the data for the model. 4. Plot the transformed data to test the proportionality (It must form a straight line through the origin). 5. Estimate the constant of proportionality (eyeball a straight line through the origin and use slope =rise/run to find the constant). 6. Obtain an overlay of the actual vs. computed data or find the errors (y actual-y predicted) to see if your model properly captures the trend of the data. Comment about the fit. Project 2 1. For the data in Question 1, is the coefficient of correlation positive, negative or zero? Fit a line by eye through the points of the scatter diagram that was constructed in Question 1. Fit a line through the data using the least squares technique. 3. Given the parabola y = 2x2 + 3, let x take on the values 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Find the corresponding y values. Which type of function - logarithmic or exponential - will best fit the given parabola? 4. Fit the data in Question 3 to either a logarithmic or exponential curve depending on your choice from Question 3. A Note about Preparing Assignments Assignments must be prepared electronically, using a word processor and whatever equation editor integrates with your word processing software. However, if your word processor is not compatible with your mentor's word processor, you will need to save your document as a rich-text file (.rtf) before submitting it. Check with your mentor first to determine file compatibility. (Important: Use the equation editor to insert equations into your word-processed document, not to create the document itself.) When preparing your answers, please identify each exercise clearly by textbook section and exercise number. To receive full credit for your answers, you must show all work and include complete solutions.
