•What does business intelligence provide when performing a strategic upgrade on technology core systems?

#2.  Reply to Jaime’s answer to #1. So you agree or disagree and elaborate on your response.

There could be several uses for business intelligence when performing a static upgrade on technology core system.  Business intelligence could be used to decide where the weaknesses are in the core system and provide justification for the upgrade, it could be used to help identify what the key business functions are and it could be used to decide what improvements need to be made. .  It can also be used to measure the success or failure of the upgraded system, as well as do a risk benefit analysis in order to identify whether or not the upgrade is really worth the investment.  Another use would be to use business intelligence for identifying what the measurements for success are and how to measure whether or not the system is a success. After the system has been upgraded business intelligence can be used to make sure the system is being used for it's intended purpose, whether or not it really does have the projected value and whether or not the projections make prior to the upgrade were correct.  It could also be used to forecast what the future needs of the system will be and compare how there business is preforming in comparison to other like businesses.

Write a 200 word short answer response that addresses the following:

•What role does technology have in social responsibility?

#6.  Respond to Eli’s answer to #5.  Say you agree or disagree and elaborate on your response.

One of the forms of social responsibility mentioned in the textbook was product recalls.  Organizations should hold themselves accountable for protecting the safety of the consumers of their products.  The role that technology can play during a product recall is that it can be leveraged to help identify and trace the affected products through an organizations supply and production chains. This ability to distinctly identify the extent of an issue allows organizations to make more extract and less costly recalls.

For example if Apple discovers that it had received a defective lot of batteries from a supplier that it then used in their iPhones.  They could use the information from their SCM and production systems to identify the exact phones the batteries were assembled into.  With access to this information Apple could then recall just the affected phones by a range of serial numbers instead of having to make a blanket mass recall of all phones of that type.

#7.  Write a 200 word short answer response that addresses the following:

•What are some of the limitations to ERP for enterprise business solutions?

#8.  Respond to Eli’s answer to #7.  Say you agree or disagree and elaborate on your response.

The textbook states that one of the limitations of ERP systems is that they typically focus on the consolidation of internal business processes only.  This internal focus may restrict the organization's ability to easily leverage the functionally and data within the ERP system with systems outside their organizational boundaries.  For example, the interactions with external entities such as business partners, upstream suppliers, and downstream customers may be out of scope of the ERP system and require the implementation of other standalone systems.  Custom integration work must then be implemented to enable effective information sharing between the ERP system and these other systems with necessary.

I also see inflexibility of predefine business processes that are built into large COTS ERP solutions (SAP, PeopleSoft, etc...)  as a potential limitation of their effectiveness.  In cases where an organization may has effective operational processes in place, but the generic ERP solution is not capable of implemented their custom processes effective without costly customizations.
