Stop at Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story

Alex Holme’s documentary on the rise and fall of American cycling star, Lance Armstrong, is a complex narrative, though it presents audiences with nothing new — nothing that is not already common knowledge. The cyclist’s fall from grace after all, was a very public one. The documentary is complex and thorough account of his story — a narrative composed of, and interwoven with interview, news reports, witness statements, music and recordings of phone calls — to mention a few.

As an audience, our position towards Lance Armstrong is unambiguous from the outset and there can be no doubt — he was a cheat and a liar; he deceived the sporting world and was showered with honours he had no right to accept. Armstrong continually broke the law to further his ambitions. Everything he did as a sportsman, came under the shadow of a lie.

Through a careful and deliberate process of selection and association, and by using all the skills available to the documentary filmmaker, Holmes stitches the smaller pieces of Armstrong’s cycling career together, creating a seamless, entertaining and informative story.

Question

Discuss how effectively the process of selection and association is used by Holmes to bring together the story of Lance Armstrong and reinforce the position adopted by the documentary and the audience.
