Project #72099 - art history Korean

HISTORY OF KOREAN ART

Assignment: Research paper

Recommended length: 1500 words

Visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to see the Korean exhibition and select one of the three ceramics shown above. Compare it to one that is placed next to it in the exhibition. Choose the one that is closest in technique!

Write a clearly structured essay, consisting of three parts: an analysis, a comparison, and a contextualization.

Part 1: Analysis

The analysis should contain a detailed description of the work, its shape and decoration (including flaws, missing parts, and repairs), and its iconographical, technological and stylistic features. (Imagine describing it over the phone to someone who cannot see it!)

Part 2: Comparison

The object for comparison should be of the same period and close to the first object in style and technique. Describe the similarities and differences between the two in detail.

Part 3: Contextualization

This part should give information on the broader social, historical, and cultural contexts that are relevant to this type of ceramic ware, such as: What stage in the technological and stylistic process does it represent? What was the possible function of this work and who might have used or commissioned it? What were the historical and cultural circumstances at the time?

Your paper should also include:

1. Basic data, such as the title of both objects, period, medium, and measurements.

3. A bibliography of articles and books – at least 4 sources – relevant for your research. Only use the reading material from the class website and the books reserved for this course at the ARTS LIBRARY! You may use the LACMA collection website for your information, but no other website!

In addition:

- Do not forget to insert page numbers!

- Use the McCune/Reischauer system of transliteration for writing Korean names and terms (refer to your handouts for the correct spelling)! (Korean diacritics can be found in Microsoft Word, under “Insert” – “Symbol.”)

- Be sure that you give the source of your citations in a footnote! Otherwise they will be considered plagiarism and your paper will be dismissed.

- Submit the LACMA entrance ticket stub together with the paper
