Project #72886 - Police Patrols 200 word minimum response

This discussion will center on the most visible part of police operations, patrol. Many texts and discussions on police operations spend a lot of time on the patrol process. When I talk about patrol I tend to divide it up into two functions, proactive patrolling and reactive patrolling. When you look at policing in the U.S. we have a decentralized system, compared to some countries that have a nationwide system. Many people find this surprising, but we don’t really know how many police departments we have in the United States, just an estimate. Out of those agencies many only have a patrol function; they have no detectives, youth sections, and no crime prevention units.

Proactive patrol: Prevent crime-highly visible preventive patrol methods that are directed toward the detection and correction of conditions/situations that invite criminal activity, thereby threatening the public peace or endangering life and/or property. Some examples include:

  • Foot patrols
  • Area checks
  • Business checks
  • Traffic enforcement
  • Information-sharing with citizens
  • Addressing quality of life issues/problem-solving
  • Getting involved with the community/getting them involved
  • Neighborhood meetings

Reactive patrol: Detection and apprehension of criminals-patrol methods that are directed toward the discovery of criminal activity and the identification and apprehension of the responsible persons. Some examples include:

  • Respond to calls for service
  • Insight apprehensions
  • Extended investigations
  • Traffic enforcement

Examples of types of patrol:

  • Foot Patrol
  • Vehicle Patrol
  • Bicycle Patrol
  • Motorcycle Patrol
  • Aviation
  • Horse
  • Water

For this week’s discussion pick a patrol function, from the list I provided or from your text, and explain what it does and how it fits into policing. Maybe comment on the function’s strengths and weaknesses Think about changes you would make. When you look at the function, view it as both a police leader and as a citizen. By the end of the week we will hopefully have a good idea of the various aspects of the patrol function, what I believe to be the backbone of policing.
