Project #73176 - Philosophy Paper (5 pages or 1200 words)

Write an essay of about 5 pages or 1200 words in response to the instructions below.
Context: This excerpt is a brief on Husserl’s ontology of categories. The main idea, for the purposes of our 101 and your Final Essay, is Husserl’s distinction between two kinds of ontological categories: formal essences called “categories” proper, and material or substantive essences called “regions”. See the scheme on p. 150 of the excerpt. Note the sketch of Husserl’s theory of “essences” as ideal properties or kinds, traditionally called “universals”. Consider how “formal essences” in Husserl’s scheme compare with “logical forms” in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. And consider how material “regions” in Husserl’s scheme compare with Searle’s distinctions among levels of reality in his Mind, Language and Society. These themes can help you to focus your thinking for the assigned essay

Essay Instructions: Searle’s Metaphysics and Ontological Categories

In his Mind, Language and Society John Searle develops a metaphysics of how mind fits into the world. Chapter 2 presents a view of “biological naturalism”. Chapters 3 and 4 present a view of mind featuring consciousness and intentionality. Chapter 5 presents a view of social reality featuring institutions.

A. The reality of mind and society. About 2 pages or 500 words.

Briefly explain how Searle’s metaphysics of mind and of society differs from mind-body dualism (as Searle sketches dualism). Focus on how, according to Searle, mind and society fit into a world that is fundamentally naturalistic.

B. Categories in Searle’s metaphysics? About 3 pages or 700 words.

Consider our studies of Aristotle’s “categories” and Wittgenstein’s “logical forms”. How do you think an ontology of categories would work if applied to Searle’s metaphysics of mind and society (as you have sketched Searle’s view in part A)?

The task is to think through, in your own terms, how we might apply the idea of ontological categories to Searle’s metaphysics. Be specific, choose a few passages from Searle, and then go to work. You may use the excerpt from DWS, Husserl, to prompt your own approach to your essay.
