Project #73759 - Communication in Current Criminal Justice Event

Review a recent police “scandal” and assess the communication that occurred between the police department, the public, and the media. A “scandal,” for our purposes, can be anything that created a significant level of public and media interest in the incident or event, such as, a controversial shooting, an employee’s dereliction of duty or misconduct, a significant violation of law or agency policy, etc.
There are three portions of this assignment that should be addressed in your answer.

I. Review of the incident: This assignment is asking you to critically assess how an agency reacted to an incident or event that is significant in nature. What did the agency do right? What did it do wrong? How could they have done better? To adequately assess an agency’s response, you should review the details of the incident or event, but only enough to adequately explain to the reader what issues or emotions might have been aroused by the incident or event. In other words, why was this incident or event important enough to the community that it caused a significant level of media coverage, public interest, and agency concern.

II. Critical assessment of the agency’s response: When assessing the agency’s response to the “scandal” you should answer the following:
• How did the agency involved communicate with the public and the media? What strategies did they employ?
• How did the public/media respond to this communication? Was the communication effective or did it cause additional problems?
• Could the agency have employed different strategies that might have been more effective? If so, what are they?
• How did issues of race, ethnicity, and/or gender impact the incident and the communication that occurred?
• Did the agency employ any conflict management or conflict resolution strategies at the individual or community level and how effective were they?
• Did the agency set any precedent for future expectations? In other words, what do you think the public and the media can expect from this agency in the future? Are their expectations positive or negative?

III. Recommendations: If you were in a position to have developed a communication strategy for the agency involved in the incident or event you have assessed, what would you have done. What strategies would you have employed? How would you have communicated with the different interest groups involved (public, media, etc.). How would you develop a strategy that both addressed the agency and the public’s needs and concerns over the current incident or event; and, lays the groundwork for future cooperation and partnership between the agency and the public.
This portion of the paper MUST include a discussion of the techniques discussed in “Crucial Conversations.” Analyze how these techniques might or might not be useful in the context of the “scandal” you are analyzing.

Since your source material for this assignment will be predominately media coverage and press release information, the “scandal” you choose should be an event or incident that created a significant level of media coverage and public interest. You have the latitude to choose whatever source material you find on the event or incident. This can include, but is not limited to:
• Newspaper articles
• Magazine articles
• Television news reports
• Internet news reports
• Blog postings
• Websites
• Youtube videos
• Academic/peer reviewed journal

6 to 8 pages 12 point font double spaced.
