Project #73906 - Field experience paper

Paper DUE JULY 4, 2015

Students will participate in a minimum of 10 hours of service learning field experience that provides them insights into understanding diversity and culture. These service learning experience sites may include summer school, after-school tutoring, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, volunteer programs (e.g., Hands on Atlanta, AID Atlanta, Meals-on-Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, etc.), community centers, church/mosque/synagogue-related facilities, day treatment programs, adult literacy programs, special education resource rooms, family literacy programs, and so forth. If a student chooses a formal summer school program offered through one of the metro Atlanta school systems she or he must have a completed Criminal Background Check on file; see http://education.gsu.edu/student-services/office-of-field-placements/criminal- background-checks/ for additional information.

It is up to the individual student to make the actual arrangements for scheduling and involvement. However, you must have your placement approved beforehand. Send an email on or before JUNE 22, 2015 (the sooner the better) to Ervin China at echina1@student.gsu.edu, describing the organization, place, dates, and times of your selection; you will receive a confirmation email approving or disapproving your selection (in SUBJECT line of email write: Your Name-Service Learning Experience).

The student must pick an environment where they can observe a cultural community that is radically different from their own experience or background.
You are required to be present for 10 hours over the semester.
Students must write a personal narrative essay (~1800 words) providing:

o A detailed description of the site and participants, including the purposes and objectives of the organization.

o What did you observe? What did you learn?page4image28672 page4image28832

o How did it make you feel? How did it change you (or not)?
o How did it relate to culture/diversity in society? How did it relate to culture/diversity in K–12schools? What impact do you think it will have on your future teaching?

o The essay should be in APA format.
