1.     Radiative Forcing. Use the below image to discuss the radiative forcing associated with each of the following: greenhouse gases, ozone depletion (both tropospheric and atmospheric), aerosols (natural and anthropogenic), land use change, black carbon on snow and solar irradiance. Be sure to discuss generally where each category comes from in your answer (10 points).

2.     Plate Tectonics and Past Climate.  Describe the below figure. Be sure to discuss what the event is and what caused it. Also describe what important ramifications were caused by the event as well as how we know it happened. Bonus points if you go outside of the lecture material for your response(s) (5 points).

3.     Ice Loss and Climate Models. Describe the major concern for each of the types of ice loss discussed in class. Recall that permafrost, arctic ice caps and the Greenland/Antarctic ice sheets each had a specific issue of concern (5 points).

4.     Fossil Fuels. Explain why you disagree or agree with the following proposals made by various energy analysts as ways to solve U.S. energy problems (5 points).

a.      Find and develop more domestic supplies of crude oil.

b.     Place a tax on gasoline and imported oil to reduce waste and consumption of resources.

c.      Increase dependence on coal.

d.     Phase out coal by 2050.

5.     Alternative Energy. Fill in the below table and answer the questions regarding what you find. You may need to look up conversions for liters to gallons, kilograms to pounds and hectares to acres (10 points).

Assumptions:

·       Assume all cars travel 12,000 miles per year.

·       Assume automobile combustion releases 19 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) per gallon of gasoline.

·       Assume the uptake of an undisturbed forest is 0.5 kg CO2 per square meter.

EPA Size Class/Model

Compact

Honda Civic Hybrid

Midsize

Toyota Camry Hybrid

Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV)

Hummer H3

Combined highway and city fuel efficiency (kpl/mpg)

17.8/42

14.4/34

6.4/15

Gallons consumed per year

Pounds of CO2 produced per year

Hectares of tropical rain forest needed to take up the carbon dioxide produced per year

a.      Approximately hoe many times as much carbon dioxide per year is produced by the SUV as is produced by the compact car?

b.     Approximately hoe many times as much carbon dioxide per year is produced by the SUV as is produced by the midsize car?

c.      How many hectares of tropical rain forest are needed to take up the carbon dioxide produced annually by 1 million SUVs?

d.     How many hectares of tropical rain forest are needed to take up the carbon dioxide produced annually by 1 million midsize cars?

e.      How many hectares of tropical rain forest are needed to take up the carbon dioxide produced annually by 1 million compact cars?

6.     Sustainability. Choose TWO of the sustainability myths and explain why you agree or disagree with each (5 points).

7.     Ethics, Economics and Politics. Read the below article regarding the Patagonia toothfish. Draw a supply and demand curve for the Patagonian toothfish (a) before it was renamed to the Chilean Seabass and (b) after it got its new name. How are the graphs different (10 points)?
