The lecture described the difference between interpretation and extrapolation. Explain, in your own words, this difference and provide a real-life example of this difference.

Interpolation vs. Extrapolation
 
 

 

 

Interpolation only considers the relevant range of the independent variable in
 
 
making a prediction. The relevant range encompasses all values, from the
 
smallest to the largest, of X used in developing the regression equation for
 
prediction. Thus, when predicting Y for a given value of X, an analyst may
 
interpolate within the relevant range of X values, but may not extrapolate beyond
 
the range of X values.
