1. The reconstruction of prehistory depends on our discovery of "documents" – such as tools, for example, made of durable materials like stone.  How does this basis of evidence affect our understanding of prehistory?  In other words, given that all we have to speculate from are durable objects that have survived thousands of years, is our available knowledge of prehistory therefore inevitably slanted in a certain direction?  What aspects of early human life, do you suppose, have left no records whatsoever?  Suppose (by comparison) that none of our written or digital material survives into the future.  How do you think future generations would view the cultural world we live in today if all they had to go on is what they could “dig out of the ground”?

2. Compare & contrast “art” as conceived and executed by early humans, and the way we think of “museum art” today.  You might ask yourself questions like: who makes it, for what reason, who owns it, where it is displayed, what it is made out of, etc.

3. Consider the various images of women (sculptures, frescoes, etc.) in these first chapters.  Do they tell us anything about the role & status of women in their respective cultures?  How so?  What do YOU think these images reveal about women?

4. After reading Chapter 4, and in particular the excerpt from Plato's Crito, did Socrates “do the right thing”? Do you admire or ridicule him for his decision? Why? Compare/contrast Socrates’ moral choice with Antigone’s moral choice. Which side does each take with respect to the theme of the chapter (which has to do with the conflict between the individual and the state)?

5. Do we still celebrate rituals of seasonal change?  Rites of passage in our individual lives?  (Mention specific examples.)  How do these contribute to our well-being?  To our sense of “control” over time and nature?

6. Is Gilgamesh’s quest in any way still relevant today?  Is the fear of death/desire for immortality perhaps a universal human concern?  What kind of behavior (i.e., give examples) do humans engage in that would support your answer?

7. The Book of Job asks why bad things happen to good people.  He doesn’t receive a direct answer other than that divine wisdom is beyond human comprehension.  How might you answer a little child who wants to know why innocent people have to suffer?

8. Imagine that you are a polytheist.  Try to convince a skeptic by making a case for the existence of many gods.  OR…  Imagine that you are a monotheist.  Try to convince a skeptic by making a case for the existence of only one god.  OR…   Imagine that you are an atheist.  Try to convince a skeptic by making a case against the existence of god.
