I have asked for an annotated bibliography in American Psychological Association (APA) format. This is a standardized form of academic writing. There are specific rules for making a citation and for how it appears on paper. Generally it is a 1" margin and double spaced throughout. You can find guidelines on this style of academic writing in many places including the XXXXX.

I am looking for a critical/evaluative annotated bibliography. Once you make the citation in APA format I expect you to address the following points in your individual entries:

  • Main focus or purpose of the work
  • Intended audience for the work
  • Usefulness or relevance to your research topic (or why it did not meet your expectations)
  • Special features of the work that were unique or helpful
  • Background and credibility of the author
  • Conclusions or observations reached by the author
  • Conclusions or observations reached by you

Each entry will be between 150-200 words.

Dig into the library data bases to find good peer reviewed publications as sources for your bibliography along with the original works of leaders in the discipline. Reliance on popular or trade magazine articles in not appropriate.

I am often asked ...what is a scholarly or peer reviewed journal?

When you write your annotated bibliography your reviewed articles should come from scholarly and or peer reviewed sources. Here is a good definition from "ABI/Inform" (one of the core databases offered by the Eden Library for Businessman Augment.

  • Scholarly Articles
A publication is considered to be scholarly if it is authored by academics for a target audience that is mainly academic, the printed format isn't usually a glossy magazine, and it is published by a recognized society with academic goals and missions.
  • Peer Reviewed
A publication is considered to be peer reviewed if its articles go through an official editorial process that involves review and approval by the author's peers (people who are experts in the same subject area.) Most (but not all) scholarly publications are peer reviewed.

Some trade publications are actually peer reviewed, but ProQuest does not consider them when filtering on peer reviewed. This is because getting results from trade publications instead of academic journals can be frustrating to researchers. Instead, ProQuest excludes these peer reviewed trade publications and only considers publications that are scholarly in terms of content, intent, and audience.
