Here is the topic for the discussion question which needs to be a minimum of 1 paragraph (2 paragraph maximum)

Read
Significance of Information Technology and consider how many of the trends and emerging technologies identified are now in existence. What changes do you envision in the next few years?

Review
Innovation-Related Indicators of the United States and Other Major Economies for a sense of the impact that software firm innovations have had and will have on careers in IT.

Then, after reviewing
The 20 Best Jobs of the Future and IT Professions & Career Profiles, identify specific career opportunities in IT that appeal to you. Share in this discussion your reflections on everything you learned in this course. Identify the topic that you found most interesting and the topic that was least interesting. Identify which area of emphasis within the IT field you are considering, based on what you learned in this course.

When responding to peers, add to a peer’s commentary on another IT topic that also intrigues you. What do these areas have in common that captures your interest? What will you need to learn about next?

Two of the largest changes that are mentioned in this article, that are now taking place is that of the “internet of things” and network improvements. In regards to network improvements, I was watching a video the other day from Xfinity. It talked about creating Wi-Fi hotspots throughout most major cities and communities. Then it went on to say that something Xfinity wants to do is have customers create their own hotspots. This is done by having a duel broadcasting router in a customer’s home. One antenna array will broad cast the personal and private network signal for the home owner, and a second will broadcast a public signal that can be used by anybody.

As for the internet of things, mainly as mentioned in the article cars, almost every major purchase today contains some kind of internet connectivity. Everything from appliances, home heating systems, to even cars has some kind of connectivity.
I foresee a feature where everything is connected to everything else. I feel it is something that I will not like and in the end will not be good for the human race in general.

Out of the 20 Best jobs of the Future and IT Professions $ Career Profiles I would most likely enjoy being a General or Operations Manager. I know this does not sound very IT related but I would like to argue that it is. Although it does not involve direct IT work the skills needed for this position does involve IT work. As a GM an individual should be able to do, or at least know about, every job skill that he/she covers. In addition to this a GM would use computers, databases, spreadsheets, and other networking instruments on a daily basis in order to keep the business running smoothly.

As the Significance of Information Technology article stated we have seen many changes in technology in the last two decades.  With consumers and businesses now relying on technology in their day to day activities we have seen an increase in big data and the need for scalable infrastructure.  With the advancement of microelectronics and microprocessors we are seeing the price for computers and storage decrease.   I believe we will continue to see even bigger data needs along with technology continuing to be integrated within our daily lives.  We now have watches that are mini computers on our wrist and the ability to do everything from our Smartphone, including paying your bills or depositing checks through mobile deposit, along with making purchases using Apple Pay. Automobiles are advancing as well to now include WiFi and are driving on their own.  It makes me think of the cartoon I use to watch as a child, the Jetsons. Maybe it’s not so far-fetched to think we will be traveling by a flying saucer and having a robot in our home.

As I stated when I started this course, I currently work in the IT field and would like to branch into information security.  It surprised me that The 20 Best Jobs of the Future article didn’t have any positions relating to a cyber-security position. I know the article was over a year old but cyber-security has been a growing concern for some time.  More companies have been adding the role of an Information Security Officer to ensure that their assets and data are protected.

The take-a-ways from the course, I enjoyed learning about Visio I’ve used it at work to update network diagrams but have never had any training.  Having a resource for future projects will come in handy.  I’ve just started updating network infrastructure diagram with Visio Professional 2013 so any tips or tricks learned will come in handy.  I also liked the network analogies week, I will definitely use some of the analogies when trying to explain to co-workers.  Susanna’s VPN analogy and Travis’ Netflix for the client-server where two of my favorites.  It does make it a lot easier for people to understand a foreign concept when you can relate it to something they are familiar with. As for least interesting, I’m not sure what to select. All areas of the course would come into play in my future IT endeavors.
