Project #75512 - Geology

1. (a) Draw a simple fully labelled structural diagram of the basic building block of silicate minerals.

 (b) Explain (with the aid of a diagram, if required) how this basic chemical unit is used to build different silicate mineral structures.

2. This question is about the formation of granite, using the granites of Dartmoor,

which formed about 290 million years ago, as an example.

1.    (a).  List the names of five minerals which are commonly found in granite.

2.    (b).  The granites exposed on Dartmoor are probably formed by the process of crustal melting (also referred to as ‘crustal anatexis’). Explain what is meant by this term.

3.     (c).  Discuss one of the possible causes for crustal melting in the Earth.

4.    (d).  Some of the granitic magmas that formed Dartmoor granite reached the Earth’s surface and caused explosive volcanism. Using sound geological reasoning explain why this volcanism was explosive in nature and name and describe the types of rocks that formed as a result.

3.   (a) Draw a fully annotated sketch of the sedimentary part of the rock cycle.

(b) Explain the changes in textural and compositional maturity that sediments undergo throughout the sedimentary part of the rock cycle.

Compare and contrast the characteristics of metamorphic rocks with those of igneous and sedimentar
