1.  What are the impacts of e-commerce / e-businesses on traditional "mom-and-pop" / "brick-and-mortar" businesses?

Although I will use this question as my basis, I believe that it ties into question two and three.  I will relate e-commerce with my love of model railroad trains and a leader in the industry, Mike's Train House or "MTH."  Prior to the internet and the power of e-commerce, if you wanted to purchase model trains, you went to one of the local dealers and were limited to what was on hand or had to get very lucky to be there at the right time to purchase something you wanted.  MTH products are carried in hundreds, if not thousands, of stores across the United States.

MTH developed their website to have EVERY product they have every developed or released in their "Product locater" link.  The consumer is now able to search, or "shop", for the product they desire or may be just looking through the site.  The consumer DOES NOT buy directly from MTH but, from the thousand's of distributors across the nation, many of whom are "mom & pop" style stores.  After a consumer locates the product they desire, they click on "Find It" and you will instantly get a list of the "mom & pop" shops that have that specific product in their inventory.  The site will tell you that this "mom & pop" store have it in stock as of a certain listed date. The MTH site provides a phone number to the store and the consumer can make a call directly to them to verify that the item is in stock and make the purchase over the phone.

So, through the power of the internet and using e-commerce, I, and any consumer, is able to broaden their shopping enjoyment at the same time, helping smaller stores stay in business.  I am able to purchase a product that I would have had no idea was avaialbe to me. The most interesting fact in the reading assignments I observed was,

  • 90% of purchases are subject to some sort of social influence – that’s the size of the social commerce market (Mardsen, 2011)
