Project #75800 - discussion based on book: Deadly choices: How the anti-vaccine movement threatens us all by Paul Offit

Appropriate/Inappropriate content of the online discussions: Please reserve the online discussions for topics relevant to this assignment.  If you want to send an individual email to anyone in the group who has commented, you may do that by clicking on their name.  Comments such as “Hey John, remember me?  I was in another class with you” or “I am interested in getting together for coffee” are considered inappropriate content for the discussion board.  Your instructor will delete any inappropriate content.  Curse words, disrespectful language and rude comments will not be tolerated.  Penalties for this inappropriate behavior include points being removed from your grade or a 0 in the assignment.

Plagiarism: Although Canvas discussions are not submitted using a plagiarism detection device, it is still important that students appropriately paraphrase any information taken from the books and any other external information.  If students use direct quotes, that information needs to be placed in quotation marks and the source needs to be indicated.  It is important to be mindful of plagiarism in all course assignments, even discussion board posts.  Refer to the Plagiarism warning under Institutional Policies.

Technical Requirements:

  • Number of posts (threads): You must submit 2 posts.
  • New posts and replies:  At least 1 of your posts must be a new post and at least 1 must be a reply to a post from your fellow classmates.
  • Post length requirement: Each post must consist of at least 200 words.

First Post Requirements:

  • Discuss a connection between the book and public health. Be sure that your post is unique and not similar to a connection already made by a peer. This post can reflect a general connection between public health and the text. It does not need to associate with one of the public health branches (this is emphasized in the research paper). For example: the book highlights issues in access to care. Public health aims to increase health care utilization and access to reduce health risks and promote health. For example….
  • Do not give a summary of the book. All students are reading and commenting on the same text.
  • Post a critical thinking question for a classmate to answer. Questions can relate to a character, part of the plot, a public health issue, etc. Be sure to read other student postings so you do not ask the same question. If your question is similar, you can edit the question prior to the deadline to receive full credit. Students who ask the same question will not receive credit for this portion of the assignment. Critical thinking questions should provoke thought and consideration among your peers and require application to public health principles. It must be evident that the question connects to the book content.
  • Be sure that your first post discussion does not answer the question that you post. The goal is for someone else to answer this question.

Second Post Requirements:

  • Answer a question posted by one of your peers as a reply post.  Be sure to thoroughly answer the question posted by your peer.  Do not answer a question already answered by a peer. The goal is for each question to be fully answered by one person only. Students who answer a question already answered by a peer will not receive full credit for this post. This answer should be the “bulk” of this post.
  • Also fully answer the following: Would you recommend this book to another student? Why or why not?  This should include at least 2 sentences of discussion.

If you post anything about how a book ends, you will not be given any points for the entire assignment. Please do not ruin a book for another student.
