Project #75860 - Source Evaluation

Purpose: to evaluate the academic quality of a source and its credibility/reliability.

The reason for writing a Source Evaluation is: to examine a source and to determine its academic quality and credibility by using the source evaluation criteria. By evaluating sources, you can make sure that the sources that you use in a paper are reliable and suitable for academic writing. Often, you do not have to write a source evaluation for each source; you evaluate it in your head as you look at the source or you maybe evaluate it in note form. But since we’re getting started, you will demonstrate to me your ability to evaluate a source for academic and professional purposes.

When writing your Source Evaluation:

  • Choose a source that is substantial enough that you’ll be able to write about it for about 2 pages.

  • Begin the evaluation paper by introducing the source—author, title, type of source (book, journal article, etc.), how you found it (online, library database, library, etc.).

  • Evaluate the source on two levels:
    • Academic Quality
      • Where does the source fall on the inverted pyramid?
      • What does that mean for its academic quality? Explain.
    • Credibility/Reliability
      • Using the criteria for evaluating sources that are identified in the readings, evaluate the source for its credibility/reliability.
      • Make direct connections to the criteria.
      • Explain your ideas.

  • State your overall assessment by the end of the paper: is the source a good source for academic writing or not?

  • Include a link to the source at the end of the paper so that I can view it as I read your evaluation.

The Source Evaluation will go wrong: if it merely contains a summary of the source or does not connect the source to the evaluation criteria identified in the readings. Many Source Evaluations go wrong because they are written solely as explanations of how the source could be used in a paper. This isn’t an essay about how the source can be used in a different paper; it’s an evaluation of whether or not the source should be used in an academic paper. Make sure to read all of the Sources & Research Topic readings in the Module 3 Readings folder. If you have questions, ask early!

Your Source Evaluation should be:

  • a concise, well written essay.
  • 2 pages in length.
