"I feel really awake. I don't recall ever feeling this awake. You know? Everything looks different now. You feel like that? You feel like you got something to live for now? " ~ Thelma

When Thelma & Louise was released in 1991, it was groundbreaking. Movies focused on female protagonists were (and still are) rare in Hollywood, and movies that make female friendship the center of their plot are even scarcer. Critics couldn't decide what to do with this genre-bending film, but it was a hit with audiences. Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, director Ridley Scott, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and editor Thom Noble were all nominated for Oscars, and Callie Khouri won the award for best original screenplay.

Thelma & Louise returns to a theme from our first book: the outlaw. Like Joaquin Murieta, Thelma and Louise are motivated by external factors to step outside the law, and that step changes the course of their lives. However, the time period that they are living in (the late 1980s or early 1990s) and the circumstances they face are very different from Murieta’s. During this module, I’d like you to think about the topics we’ve discussed thus far, and how Thelma & Louise expands or complicates our understanding of these topics. Broadly speaking, these are some of the topics we’ve looked at in The Life and Adventures of Joaquin MurietaShaneHigh Noon, and Blazing Saddles:

  • Campbell’s theory of the hero’s journey (and its applicability to a female story)
  • The hero’s relationship to the law
  • The hero’s relationship to the community
  • The hero’s relationship to abstract ideals (of truth, justice, etc.)
  • The way heroism is defined or restricted by society and prevailing stereotypes

As always, you should think about the plot of the story, but also how the story is being constructed, in this case by the director Ridley Scott. Pay attention to the film techniques that are being employed, especially ones that make an impression on you or compare in some way to previous films we’ve watched. You should also think about what kind of a film this is. In your opinion, is this a comedy or a tragedy? An outlaw movie or a road trip movie? A feminist Western or a patriarchal fantasy? Is the ending positive or negative? These are topics that people debate about, and I’ll be interested to see what you have to say.

Your assignment for this module is to watch the movie Thelma & Louise; listen to an audio interview with Callie Khouri, the screenwriter, who talks about the movie and its relevance twenty years after its release; read a short academic article that contains several different academic interpretations of the movie; and write a discussion post sharing your perspectives and ideas.

Write a discussion post (300 words) that responds to all of the points below:

  • What does this movie (Thelma & Louise)add to your understanding of heroism? How do Thelma and Louise resemble the heroes (or anti-heroes) we’ve encountered so far in this class? How are they different?
  • How does the movie construct its vision of these characters and their story? What cinematic elements or film techniques is the director using? Why? (Choose two to discuss).
  • In “The Many Faces of Thelma and Louise,” there are several smaller articles that discuss different topics. Which article did you find most interesting or convincing? Which one was least convincing? Why? What is your interpretation of this movie?
