Project #77159 - National Policy Evaluation

For this essay, you need to pick a significant and timely political issue of interest to you to examine in a 6 to 8 page essay. The issue you select MUST involve American national politics—it cannot be an issue that involves only state and/or local government. You need to email me with your topic on or before July 1st, or I will subtract 3 points from your grade.

To research your paper, you need to use at least 5 separate and reputable sources. If you have questions about whether a source is appropriate, check with me or CLC’s reference librarians who are also available to help. Make sure to use proper MLA citations (a bibliography or endnotes not footnotes). Your paper must be double-spaced with a 12-point font. Proofread to minimize grammatical errors and typos and cite your material properly.

In your paper, you will need to provide a brief background about your topic, and why it is relevant to examine in 2015. You then need to identify the way or ways in which this issue is shaped by the national government by evaluating the role of the president, Congress, the courts, and the bureaucracy. Some issues may involve all of these while others might be shaped most significantly by Congress and/or the bureaucracy (others may involve the courts, for instance). The key is to determine in what way the national government has enacted laws involving your policy.

This essay is NOT an opinion piece—it is not a pro-con examination of gun control or abortion, for example, but an examination of how policy in an area has been/or is being developed.

Essay Structure:

Introduction (1 to 2 pages): Introduce your topic by briefly explaining its political nature and why it is a contemporary concern—also include background on the issue that explains where the law stands today regarding your topic.

Analysis (3-4 pages): In this section, you need to provide a detailed discussion of the political process involved in your issue (which part or parts of the political system most shape your issue). Make sure to provide a detailed description of the part or parts of the federal government that most significantly make policy/law regarding your topic.

Conclusion (1-2 pages): Summarize your findings (which branch or branches of government is/are the most significant player or players in your policy area), what is happening currently with your policy (is the law settled, under debate or likely to come up for debate soon?). And, briefly, what do you surmise might happen in the near future.
