Project #78196 - Research, Appraisal questions to answer

Journal articles often consist of an abstract (a synopsis of the study) and four major sections that often follow the IMRAD           form at:

Introduction: research problem and its context

Method Section: strategies used to answer research questions

Results: study findings

Discussion: interpretation of the findings

Why are research articles so hard to read?

Jargon: The authors of research articles use research terms that may seem esoteric.

Read the abstract and introduction of the report by Weinert & colleagues ("Computer intervention impact") and then answer the following question in detail:

a) Does the structure of this article follow the IMRAD format?

b) Is the abstract a traditional narrative or is it a "new style" abstract?

c) Does the abstract summarize information about the study purpose, how the study was done, what the key findings were, and what the finding mean?

d) Skim the Methods section. Is the presentation in the active or passive voice?

e) Is this study experimental or non-experimental?

f) Was the principle of randomness used in this study?

g) What parts of the abstract were most difficult to understand? Identify words that you consider to be research "jargon".
