The assignment is for you and a partner to do a short presentation on a case study in business ethics. The subject will be an ethical case study chosen from your chosen field of business endeavor. This assignment will be directly based upon the method on page 17 our text book An Introduction to Business Ethics.
First, you will choose a case study from your chosen field of business endeavor. An Accounting majors should choose a case featuring accounting firm getting into ethical problems. A marketing major one featuring an ethical problem dealing with marketing. You get the idea. Try to choose a case that features serious ethical problems yet which is somewhat novel. There are many cases mentioned in the text book. Other business ethics textbooks contain more cases. There are special books published specifically about case studies in business ethics you can check on at the library or bookstore. Even a good comprehensive magazine article on a recent problem in business ethics can work well.
Once you and your partner have chosen a case study the first thing to do is provide a short synopsis or abstract of it. This is a short one to two paragraph description of the bare facts of the case. Think of it as the way you will fulfill the first bullet point on page 17 of the textbook “Understanding the facts.” An abstract might already be present in case studies you find in journals or textbooks. Here is what the general outline should look like:
Synopsis or Abstract of Case
Ethical Issues Involved
Stakeholders and How Effected
Imagining Ethical Alternatives
(Please talk about the ethical theories we have been studying here).
How Alternatives Will Effect Stakeholders
Recommendations for a Solution
Monitoring the Results
The assignment in total will consist of you and your partner’s spoken presentation along with a detailed outline of said spoken presentation(one outline per team).
You and your partner will team up in both of these aspects. The detailed outline should be 6-10 pages long and research based. It should follow the general outline given above. The presentation should last 15 minutes with a Q&A session at the end. It should, of course, also follow the general outline given above. The detailed outline will be due at the time of the presentation and should be handed to me just before you and your partner do your presentation. The main things I will be looking for are an effective use of “A Model for Ethical Decision Making” format, form of paper, application of ethical theory, and effectiveness of presentation.
Remember to keep it brief and keep it factual. Assume your audience cares about the subject matter and is general well informed. Do not immediately appeal to emotion or make value judgements. Try to be as factual and as brief as possible and be prepared to deal with questions (because if your classmates do not ask them I will).
This should be a fun experience that will help you develop skills that will directly translate into your chosen career path. Presentations will begin on Tuesday July 28 and continue the rest of the semester. We will keep a schedule yet I suggest you come to class each day ready to do your presentation. Feel free to make use of the classroom however you like during your presentation. However, if you are going to use tech make sure you try it out beforehand as we cannot afford delays.
