Project #80691 - Reflection and Action—Your Philosophical Worldview

Have you ever heard the expression that someone is "right-brained" or "left-brained"? This notion implies that there are multiple ways of viewing the world or of perceiving reality. How you perceive the world may influence your thinking and actions in ways that go beyond the obvious. Creswell (2014) describes a “worldview” as a “basic set of beliefs that guide action” and one’s “general orientation about the world” (p. 6). For a researcher, it is critical to recognize one's worldview and the perspectives that derive from it. One means of doing this is to conduct a personal inventory. It is also valuable to recognize the ways in which your personal worldview shares the values and perspectives of the philosophical worldviews described in the Creswell text.

In this week’s Discussion, you will articulate your personal worldview by completing a personal worldview worksheet that prompts you with questions to help you reflect on your beliefs. You will then analyze the ways in which your personal beliefs align with the philosophical worldview described in the Creswell (2013) text.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Complete the handout Your Personal Worldview Worksheet.
  • Review Chapter 1, "The Selection of a Research Design" (pp. 3–23) in the Creswell text. Focus on Creswell's definitions of worldview and paradigms on page 6.
  • Consider how your worldview aligns with the worldviews described in Chapter 1 of the Creswell text.
  • Consider the ways in which a potential area of research for your doctoral study expresses aspects of your philosophical worldview.
  • Review the media program Introduction to Research Design.

By Day 3, post a 200- to 400-word statement explaining your personal worldview to your colleagues and Instructor. Follow the worksheet’s instructions for drafting your personal statement, and include how your worldview aligns with the worldviews described in this week’s readings from the course text, Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches. Be sure to incorporate ideas and concepts from the media program about practitioner and professional doctorates, as well.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the reading(s) and/or media segment(s) and use APA format.
