Project #81099 - writing process, paragraph

4 questions, 10 points each, 40 points total

  1. Rewrite the following paragraph to improve unity and coherence, sentence style, language choices, and overall tone. Also, correct any punctuation, grammar, or spelling errors you find.

Dorothy thinks life on a farm in Kansas is stupid and boring, then she gets sucked up in a tornado and lands in Oz. With the witch’s ruby slippers, she follows the yellow brick road in hopes to find the Wizard who would help her get home. She meets a scarecrow. She meets a tin man. She meets a coward lion. The Wizard agrees to help them, but first he puts a hit on the Wicked Witch of the West. The four friends kill the witch, but the Wizard is a phony. She remembers the shoes, clicks her heels together three times, and says ‘theres no place like home.’ She wakes up back at home with her friends and family, and realized it was all a dream.

  2. Rewrite the following paragraph so that all of the ideas follow a logical order. Use appropriate transitions and coordinating and subordinating words to achieve clarity, smoothness, and a variety of sentence styles.

We were alone on the road. We left the highway and followed a service road. A sudden thundershower made us even more uneasy. We could barely see the road. No other cars drove in front of us or behind us. I was driving. Our first inkling of a problem was a sign announcing that the highway was closed. I was particularly afraid of hitting something alongside the road. Our tires were sinking into mud. The whole car was off the road. The unspeakable happened, and the right wheels left the pavement and dropped below the surface of the roadway.

  3. Now that you have read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, write a descriptive or persuasive paragraph about one of the following topics. Use one of the orders discussed on pages 449–450 in your Grammar and Composition Handbook. Clearly label your paragraph’s purpose (descriptive or persuasive) and its organization (chronological, spatial, importance, cause and effect, or comparison/contrast).

    1. Describe life as a knight of the Round Table.
    2. Does the Green Knight follow the code of knighthood? Explain.
    3. Does Sir Gawain follow the code of knighthood? Explain.

  4. After reading the excerpt from Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur and reviewing the writing process of a paragraph, write a narrative or expository paragraph on one of the following topics. Clearly label your paragraph as narrative or expository.

    1. Trouble in the kingdom
    2. Arthur’s combat with Mordred
    3. Another adventure of Arthur (you may make up your own)
