This assignment follows up on Assignment 1 in which you engaged in a ‘descriptive’ use of systems
thinking. There, you used the ‘structure causes behavior’ paradigm to understand – i.e. make sense of –
how the observed behavior is caused by the underlying systems structure. This assignment will require
you to refine and develop that underlying structure more precisely, and then apply systems thinking in a
prescriptive manner – i.e. develop and justify an intervention.
a. [50 points]
i. Review the components of the system structure that you had developed in part (b) of assignment 1. Make any changes to this list of components you feel are appropriate as a result of the new content you have learnt in week 2 regarding circles of causality. This could include modification of definitions, deletion of one or more components and/or addition of new components. Show the revised list of components along with their definitions.
ii. Using this revised list of components, write a narrative identifying circles of causality present in your structure. When doing so, show the component names in bold. For each of these circles of causality identify if they are reinforcing or balancing. This is not required but, if you think it will add to clarity, you may also show these circles of causality pictorially in an appendix. (no more than 300 words)
b. [50 points]
Identify interventions you would take to improve the system behavior that you had described in assignment 1 and, using the circles of causality identified above in a (ii), justify why you think these interventions will result in improvement of system behavior. This part of the exercise is the prescriptive use of systems thinking where you are justifying your intervention by mentally simulating the effects of that intervention through your mental model of the system structure to deduce the outcome.(no more than 500 words)
