Term Project Overview

Ver. 13.11

The Term Project will provide you with the opportunity to prepare a "management-style" presentation (in PowerPoint or OpenOffice), along with an executive summary (a short paper summarizing your presentation) and a bibliography. As a management-style presentation, it will focus on business issues that are of concern to managers, rather than on technical issues.

Since this isn't an "in-person" class, you won't actually present to the class, although you will present it to a person of your choosing at a later point. You will prepare a presentation that includes a written report (an executive summary) and a bibliography. These are explained in detail in the pages in this section.

Software

To prepare your presentation, you may use either Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT), if it is available to you, or the freeware presentation package that is part of either OpenOffice (openoffice.org) or LibreOffice (libreoffice.org) The freeware package is a little rough around the edges, but it has all the functionality you need, and it is free (always a nice feature, especially for students). Whichever package you use, please save the file in PowerPoint (PPT) format, which all of them will do. If using OO or LO, you may also want to submit the native file, in case there are problems with formatting conversion (which sometimes happens).

The Process

The term project consists of a series of well-defined steps that occur throughout the semester. Whether you are a novice or an expert at creating presentations, this process will help you create a well-researched presentation that focuses on the needs of management.

The steps for completing the project are explained in detail on the following pages, but here is a summary:

  1. Choose the Subject for your project
  2. Research content and create a text Outline
  3. Create a Draft of a few pages of your presentation
  4. Review and improve the presentation
  5. Submit the Final presentation and accompanying files

Deadlines

Deadlines for term project assignments are specified in the Schedule. Please refer to the Schedule early and often. Most assignments relating to the term project may be turned in up to the "Last Day" (see the Schedule) for partial credit. It is very important to keep up, since each phase builds on the progress of and feedback from the previous phase.

If you turn in an assignment late, please send me an email so I will know to look for it. I'll find it eventually, but I would like to grade late TP assignments as soon as possible so you can move to the next step.
