Essay Assignment #1: Comparison and Contrast

Minimum requirements to earn credit:
Length: 3 pages

Purpose: To practice the mode of comparison and contrast; To consider audience and purpose; To contemplate career choices; To practice the steps of writing an essay; To use proper grammar and spelling.
Essay: Write a 3 page essay that compares and contrasts two careers of your choice. These should be careers you are actually interested in pursuing. You must use the point-by-point organization scheme, so it will be helpful to you if you make an outline before you begin. Develop and explain each main idea in its own paragraph. The essay must have one clear thesis statement that addresses the specific main ideas of your essayin one sentence.
Do not use a vague thesis such as “There are many similarities and differences between industrial-organizational psychology and counseling psychology.”
Instead, make sure your thesis is very specific: “Although the industrial-organizational psychologists and counseling psychologists both have similar skills, the required education, job outlook, and daily tasks are different.”
Sources: Research is not required for this essay. You may complete this essay with your own knowledge of the subjects. However, if you decide to do more research (online or in any other format) you must follow the instructions on the attached sheet. If you include any research without following those instructions, you riskearning a permanent zero on the assignment for plagiarism.
Format: Use standard spelling, grammar, and diction. Follow the MLA formatting guidelines (on setting up page numbers, title, font, etc). These guidelines will be discussed in class and are also posted on NS Online.
Rough draft requirements: Rough drafts must be typed, and they must meet the minimum length of the essay or they will lose points.
Optional conferences: You will have the opportunity to sign up for a one-on-one conference with me. If you choose to sign up, you will bring one copy of your current rough draft and meet me during your conference time in K- 120G. If you miss your appointment or do not come prepared, it counts as an absence.
Submission: Your document must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format or it cannot be graded. Remember to review the penalties for submitting a late paper that are listed in the syllabus. Do not email your essay; submit it on NS Online by logging into our course, clicking the Evaluation tab, and then choosing Assignment Dropbox. (More detailed directions are available as a document on the Content tab.)
Grading: This essay will be graded according to the rubric for this course. The rubric is available on NS Online. Since there is no required research component to this essay, the grade breakdown will be as follows: Content =35 points; Organization = 35 points; Editing = 30 points - for a total score out of 100 points.
Extra help: If you have a specific question that can be answered in an email, send me an email. Please do not send me your entire paper in an email. If you need more help, ask me for an appointment or take your paper to the Learning Center for suggestions.
