Instructions: This test contains two essay (five paragraphs at minimum) discussion questions. For each question, you should write a good basic literary argument with a clear thesis and reasons why, which will be explained in the body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should argue each individual point logically with at least one direct quote from the primary text (the literary work) per paragraph. The direct quotes should be cited and incorporated into your argument. Work cited page is not necessary if you are using the textbook for the class for page/line numbers. I will check for grammar and correct handling of quotes according to MLA. Each question is worth 50pts each for 100pts total.
1. Both “The Dream of the Rood” and Beowulf deal with a conflict between social values/ideals of Germanic tribes versus the values held by these tribes when they become Christians. Explain this conflict of values using examples from both works.
2. Using examples from Beowulf, explain what specific criteria makes a good ruler according to this text (more at the beginning of the text) and whether or not Beowulf is a good ruler based on these criteria.
