Businesses and Social Networks 

Several methods of marketing are available to businesses. From TV and radio advertising to public relations and junk mail, businesses use a variety of techniques to communicate who they are and what they have to offer to their target audience.

Nowadays, businesses are using newer technologies to reach their potential customers. One of the technologies used is Social Networks, created originally to facilitate personal contacts but more recently permeated by the presence of businesses.

In this assignment, students will write a one– or two–page paper essay on the use of Social Networks by businesses. To help think about how businesses use social networks like Facebook, students may want to research the web for words like Online Marketing or Facebook Marketing. For example, KLM (the Royal Dutch Airlines) offers its passengers the possibility of choosing their seatmate based on the people’s social media profile (Paul, 2011).

In an introductory paragraph, students will define Social Networks. They will introduce the concept with a quoted definition (presented in the proper MLA or APA style of citations’ techniques1 ). They can use any “published” resources in existence (textbooks, books, articles, web pages, dictionaries, or encyclopedias — online or on paper, including Wikipedia) as the foundation for their answer.

In a second paragraph, students will describe how businesses make their presence known on those social networks.

In a third paragraph, students will list two advantages and two disadvantages (for businesses) to using social networks as marketing tools.

In a concluding (fourth) paragraph, students will summarize their findings and recommend using (or not using) social networks to businesses, remembering to say why.

Last paragraph: A summarization of the findings (+ 3 points) A recommendation in favor of or against using Social Networks (+ 1 point) An explanation for the recommendation (Why is this recommendation made?) (+ 3 points)
