Project #82571 - Biology Lab assignment

This is a multipart assignment and is not all due by Sept. 20th. Please note the due dates below.  Also, see attached biology lab format pdf.

Since this is a biology 101 lab.

Project intro and details:

Did you ever wonder which grass seed grew the fastest for your money or which type of flour makes bread rise the highest? You will have the opportunity to answer questions like these in this lab course. The project will be completed in 3 steps throughout the fall. The emphasis of this project is to design and execute a controlled experiment. Students will brainstorm, research, compose a hypothesis, design a procedure, organize results, analyze them, and provide an appropriate conclusion. Each student will share their experiment with classmates through a posted PowerPoint presentation. The final portion of the project will be both teacher and peer reviewed, and the comments should be used to help write the final lab report.

The 3 parts of the project are broken down as follows:

  • Part 1/3: Pick a topic, make a hypothesis based on research, create a list of materials you will use, and design a procedure. This piece is due Sunday, 9/20.
  • Part 2/3: When approved, you will carry out the experiment and record data. You will organize the information into a PowerPoint. This piece is due Sunday, 10/24.
  • Part 3/3: Student may continue completing more trials if warranted, analyze results, and draw a valid conclusion. Students will post a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the entire process for teacher and peer review. The PowerPoint is due Sunday, 11/28.
  • In addition, students will submit a formal lab report. This report is due Thursday, 12/9.

Please chose an appropriate topic or problem to explore at the collegiate level. This topic should be directly related to your personal life so it has value to you. Once you pick your topic, you need to conduct research to gain more background knowledge. If you choose Internet sites over books, please make sure that they are educational sites and not ".coms"; Wikipedia is not a valid source. An APA formatted reference page of at least 3 sources is required. If you need help formatting the references, please use the bibliography maker provided below.

Using the research you have conducted, please create a valid hypothesis in an if/then format. The independent variable you have chosen is the 'if' statement and the dependent variable that you are measuring is the 'then' statement. You may also include a 'because' clause in the hypothesis statement. You will then need to plan the materials that you will need to conduct the experiment. Materials should be in a bulleted list format. Finally, you will need to write a clear, concise, and easy to follow procedure, making sure to include all materials you listed. The steps need to be written so that anyone can repeat your experiment exactly. You will need to consider your budget when planning your procedure. Most students have trouble with the procedure. After I grade this assignment I may suggest changes to your experimental design before you are approved to begin your project. Topics can include biology, chemistry, ecology, physics, behavioral science, botany, or microbiology.

For example:

Which sunscreen brand will be the most effective based on cost?

I would research:

  • chemicals found in a few different types of sunscreen
  • melanin in skin
  • SPF
  • Types of UV Monitors

Based on my research I may hypothesize: "If Banana Boat sunscreen is applied to a pane of glass, then fewer UV rays will penetrate through compared to the other brands."
