Project #82946 - phase 5

You are a police investigator, and here are your cases for the week.

A serial rapist is attacking women in your city. He targets women at a major mall. All six of his victims were shopping at the Skill Mall. These women were carrying shopping bags and were about to enter their vehicles. There were suddenly rushed by this previously unseen assailant who pushes them into their cars. He forces them to hand over their keys and then he drives to dirt roads just outside town and assaults them.

An arsonist is torching a new development on the edge of town. The method that has been used has been very simple. Lighter fluid has been used as an accelerant to ignite building materials left at the individual construction sites. The fires have all been set between 2 and 4 a.m. Because the houses were unoccupied, no one has been hurt.

Reginald Ayers, a 64-year-old male, was found dead in the study of his large expensive home. His body was discovered Monday morning by his 32-year-old son, Phil. Mr. Ayers was shot once in the right temple with a handgun. The handgun was found clutched in his right hand. The fatal wound is in his right temple, with an exit wound through the left temple. He was sitting at his desk.

Your tasks and responsibilities will be to formulate a criminal profile of the offenders. It is important to identify the method of operation and signature behaviors (if any), identify the behavioral-motivational topologies, induce and deduce the facts of the crimes, and develop an investigative strategy that will aid in solving the crimes and obtain forensic evidence for courtroom use.

Part I: Course Testimony

A suspect is captured at a shopping center's parking lot wearing a ski mask and matching the general description of the rapist given in the primary scenario. He now awaits trial on 6 counts of rape.* His defense attorney is arguing that his client (who is considered mentally challenged) is too intellectually deficient to be the culprit. The defense attorney argues that the absence of DNA, fingerprints, and other evidence shows that a much more intelligent perpetrator must have committed these crimes.

Instructions

  • Given your role as chief investigator for this case, answer the following questions in a PowerPoint presentation (4–6 slides) that you will deliver to the court in response to the defense attorney’s arguments:
    • What facts do you try to establish to link the offender to these crimes?
    • What evidence do you have linking the offender to the crimes?
    • What testimonies do you have linking the offender to the crimes?
  • Please note that the suspect will not confess to these crimes.

*Please note: The criminal statutes that address rape or sexual assault often vary according to jurisdiction. These statutes may use different terms for the offense, such as ‘rape’ or ‘sexual assault’ and may even include different acts in their definitions of the crime than other jurisdictions. Please assume that this scenario takes place in a jurisdiction (such as Illinois, Nevada, or South Dakota, among others) in which the acts of the serial rapist could properly be charged as rape or sexual assault.
