Project #82953 - phase 3

You are a police investigator, and here are your cases for the week.

A serial rapist is attacking women in your city. He targets women at a major mall. All six of his victims were shopping at the Skill Mall. These women were carrying shopping bags and were about to enter their vehicles. There were suddenly rushed by this previously unseen assailant who pushes them into their cars. He forces them to hand over their keys and then he drives to dirt roads just outside town and assaults them.

An arsonist is torching a new development on the edge of town. The method that has been used has been very simple. Lighter fluid has been used as an accelerant to ignite building materials left at the individual construction sites. The fires have all been set between 2 and 4 a.m. Because the houses were unoccupied, no one has been hurt.

Reginald Ayers, a 64-year-old male, was found dead in the study of his large expensive home. His body was discovered Monday morning by his 32-year-old son, Phil. Mr. Ayers was shot once in the right temple with a handgun. The handgun was found clutched in his right hand. The fatal wound is in his right temple, with an exit wound through the left temple. He was sitting at his desk.

Your tasks and responsibilities will be to formulate a criminal profile of the offenders. It is important to identify the method of operation and signature behaviors (if any), identify the behavioral-motivational topologies, induce and deduce the facts of the crimes, and develop an investigative strategy that will aid in solving the crimes and obtain forensic evidence for courtroom use.

The organized versus disorganized continuum will assist you in the serial rapist case that you have been working on. This classification system is easy to use and can be used to classify the crime scene characteristics.

Instructions

  • Using the organized-disorganized continuum, write a paper (1–2 pages) describing the characteristics of the offender from the serial rape scenario.
    • Use the physical/behavioral evidence as a primary guide to understand the offender's behavior.
    • What are the characteristics associated with this offender?
    • Remember that the crime scene will fit somewhere on the continuum, not simply organized or disorganized.
    • How does the fact that this is a repetitive offender affect your decision?
    • How do you think using the continuum will help in solving this case?
    • How would you use this information in a testimony in the courtroom?
