Project #83119 - writers notebook assignment

  1. Number, title, and date the entries.  Be sure the title reflects the type of entry you are creating, i.e., small moment, crafting technique and the name of the technique, mentor text title and author with a crafting technique and the name of the technique.
  2. First Entry - Jot down a small moment in time that could lead to a short narrative. I have had many candidates write about the first time their parents dropped them off at college. I have had students write about the time they were engaged or a special grandparent. You write about any special moment in time. If the moment is special to you and connects to you emotionally, it will be easier to develop it into a narrative. Now, a moment in time is not lengthy, a paragraph or two. You will expand this moment in your narrative assignment later. (If you do this assignment for me then I will most likely need you to do the assignment later that continues this story) Consider this your prewriting for a narrative assignment.
  3. Second Entry - List a crafting technique or skill and show how you would use that technique or skill in your own writing.  A example of a crafting technique is a recurring line like in the song "Row, row, row your boat." This line is repeated several times in the song. It makes the song interesting. If you also use a crafting technique from a mentor text, list the title and author of that text. You do not have to use a mentor text on this entry.
  4. Third Entry - Use one mentor text with a crafting technique in the last entry. A mentor text is just a piece of literature that you use to show a crafting technique that the author used in the work. A mentor text is a book, poem, etc. where a clever strategy was used that you want to practice using, or you want your students to practice using. Mentor texts are good to use in minilessons. List the literature title and author that inspired the piece when using a mentor text. Again, in this entry, you will list a crafting technique and a mentor text title and author. Do not get bogged down with what may be a new term to you, mentor text.
