Project #83229 - english writing

For this assignment, you will analyze a piece of academic or professional writing. You may also choose to compare a piece of academic writing to a piece of professional writing. The audience for this paper is our class. The tone is formal/academic. Your essay should have a specific point or argument, but that might look different from the kind of traditional thesis you’re used to.

The general focus of your essay should be the rhetorical choices/features of the piece of writing you’ve selected. These choices/features include (but are not limited to) word choice, layout and design, paragraph and sentence length, type of evidence used, etc. We’ll compile a more comprehensive list in class.

Questions to consider include (but again are not limited to): What constitutes compelling evidence for this field in this genre? What does the type of evidence used say about what the field values? What seems to be the appropriate tone for this genre of writing? Why might writers in this field/genre use this tone? Does this field use visual representations of information? Why? How might people in this field use this kind of writing, and is that use value reflected in the rhetoric of the writing?

You’ll want to not only identify the rhetorical choices/features, but you’ll also (and more importantly) want to discuss the significance of those choices.
