Project #83896 - Online post

You can restrict disk space by implementing disk quotas. When you do this, the system administrator will be alerted before a user consumes too much disk space or a partition becomes full.

Disk quotas can be configured for individual users and user groups. This configurations makes it possible to manage the space allocated for user-specific files (i.e., email) separately from the space allocated to any projects that a user works on (provided the projects are given their own groups).

Quotas can also be set to control the number of disk blocks consumed and to control the number of inodes, which are data structures that contain file information in UNIX file systems. Because inodes are used to contain file-related information, this allows you to control the number of files that can be created.

In your discussion post:

  • Explain why disk quotas are important to implement in a business or organization. What problems may arise if there are not configured?
  • When would it be important to allocate space on a hard drive? Create a scenario in which configuring disk quotas would be helpful. In your scenario, imagine that you have a 1TB hard drive and need to restrict the disk space, and you need to setup three servers. Allocate disk space for an intended purpose and explain why you have set it up this way.
