Project #83973 - 2-3 page expository essay on your choosing of historical events

English 12A: Expository Essay (Unit 4, Lesson 5 & 12)

Your assignment: Write a 2 to 3 page double spaced expository essay which presents information and offers an explanation. An expository essay can take many forms, but its main purpose is to set forth an explanation, to analyze a subject, or to communicate information. The purpose of the expository essay is to explain a topic in a logical and straightforward manner. Without bells and whistles, expository essays present a fair and balanced analysis of a subject based on facts—with no references to the writer’s opinions or emotions.

There are many different forms of expository writing, and some of those are:

·         Cause and effect essays explain how things affect each other and depend on each other. The writer identifies a clear relationship between two subjects, focusing on why things happen (causes) and/or what happens as a result (effects). (Why growing numbers of people shop online, effects of cramming for a test, why people eat fast food, effects of texting on communication, key causes of stress among students, etc.)

·         “How to” essays, sometimes called process essays, explain a procedure, step-by-step process, or how to do something with the goal of instructing the reader. (Examples: How to take care of your dog; how to download apps to your phone; strategies for scoring well on unit tests; strategies for success in online classes, strategies for buying a used car, how to juggle a job and school, etc.)

·         Classification essays break down a broad subject or idea into categories and groups. The writer organizes the essay by starting with the most general category and then defines and gives examples of each specific classification. (types of diets; types of football quarterbacks; types of Facebook users; categories of drivers; types of parents, types of coaches, etc.)

Your topic: Your choice as long as it fits the requirements listed above for an expository essay.

Formatting: As always, please use MLA formatting, which means...(1) Font - 12pt. Times New Roman, (2) Heading - Name, Course, Date (i.e. Joe Student, Instructor Burge, English 11A, September 3, 2011) in the upper left hand of the first page only; Title is centered on the first page only with no underlining or bold used, (3) Spacing - double spaced throughout, no extra spaces used in between paragraphs.

Scoring: Please refer to Expository Writing Rubric on p. 5 in Lesson 5 of Unit 4.
