Project #84012 - 5 short questions due in 4-5 hrs

Instrustions

Please answer the following questions in your own words and in complete sentences.  Answers can be found in Thomas Nagel’s article “What is it like to be a bat?” (located on our Blackboard account).  You must type out your answers to the questions on a separate sheet(s) of paper. Please make sure that on your own paper you type out the questions you are answering along with your answers. Please put the title of the assignment and number on the top of your paper, along with the class and your name. Your responses must answer the questions completely so that someone (like your mom) who hasn’t read Nagel’s article would fully understand the questions and your answers. Only hard copies are accepted. Please do not submit your assignment to me electronically.

1. How does Nagel define what it is for an organism to have conscious mental states?

2. What do you think Nagel means by ‘point of view’ and ‘phenomenological features of experience’?

3. Why does Nagel think that “it is a mystery how the true character of experience could be revealed in the physical operation of [an] organism”?

4. Does Nagel think that the argument he makes in his article shows that “physicalism must be false”?

5. Nagel says that we “have some reason to believe that sensations are physical processes, without being in a position to understand how.” What, according to Nagel, prevents us from understanding how sensory experiences are just brain processes?
