Here is the topic of the discussion. (Dont answer the following questions, i have already finished), i am living in california.

Our Country has been dealing with serious economic issues: Climbing Unemployment, Outsourcing & Failed businesses, Foreclosures, Debt, Weakening of the dollar, etc -- How would a functionalist explain our current economic issues? How would a conflict view these issues? View from a sociological perspective.

Which perspective (conflict or functionalism) offers a better explanation? Why?  This is where you can include your opinion.  Support your ideas with citation(s).

Here are two posts of my classmates. Reply each of them with more than 150words.

POST1:

From functionalism theory perspective society in America is properly functioning when groups with opposing views come together through bureaucracy to vie for their own benefit; they reach a middle ground through compromise, competition and common interest.

The current economic state of America is the result of poor representation of the people, a costly war and risky economic law policies. When America was doing well and had a surplus certain laws were in place to protect the economy. Confident with wealth and power certain laws were enacted like the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that removed tariffs and other protections that were put into place to discourage the outsourcing of jobs and the value of American goods.

Laws protecting against monopolies have also been removed. The media, which should normally function as a tool to promote the values and norms of a society (Carl 2013:91), is now being controlled by a small group of powerful people that are controlling the economy by promoting their own agendas, suppressing information and buying out campaigns. These changes in law and media, combined with a costly war, have been detrimental to America.

This was all too inevitable from the conflict theory perspective. The bourgeoisie will always be looking for opportunities to exploited proletariat. In America they have been pretty successful in positioning themselves. This is evidenced by the fact that the rich are indeed richer and the poor are poorer.

Functionalism theory and conflict theory both have validity in explaining the current economic situation of America on their own and when combined work together to explain the situation. Functionalism theory shows how society should be functioning and opens the door to figuring out why it is not. Conflict theory explains why there will always be a struggle to maintain balance and where to look.

POST2:

A functionalist would view our country's economic problem as a rolling affect. It does not matter the size of the company if it goes out of business it will be negative in another way. Everything is connected as one and so once one is down they all slowly decrease as well. Due to the economy being rough not only do companies go out of business but jobs are also lost. This makes managing a home lifestyle very difficult and with an unbalanced home comes unbalanced school work for the students who are living at home. A conflict theory is very similar to functionalist the only thing is that conflict theory would examine why a decrease in the economy would butterfly down to kids doing bad in schools.Conflict theory also looks at the ages, gender, race, and religion when they are trying to solve the issue. Having economic issues is not the only thing that it effects because it has this trickling effect that continues to cause problems in other ways as well. I think that the functionalist theory is the one with the better explanation because it does not matter what age, sex, or race you are. Losing a job due to a poor economy doesn't seem to be the problem of the person but the company that is losing money. "Functionalism treats society as relatively secure-everything that occurs has a purpose in the preservation of stability"(Carl 2013:8). This is the idea that things are supposed to happen to create an overall balance. Things will work there way out and be equal.
