"In this weeks' reading 'Theory of Globalization', William I. Robinson discoursed different global theories that has emerged since the beginning of globalization origin dabates.
Robinson made it clare that there are no theories of globalization, rather there are many theoretical discourses that dealt with the term globalization; such as Marxism, Weberianism, Functionalism, Postmodernism, critical and Feminist theory etc...
According to Robinson, there are three broad approaches in globalization theories rising from the question- when did globalization begin?: The first is the process that has been going on "since the dawn of history (5,000-10,000 ya). Second is the proces connecting with the spread and development of capitalism and modernism, thus 500 year frame. And last but not the least is a recent phenomena that associates with the processes like: postindustrialization, postmodernization/the restructuring of capitalism, thus a 20-30 year time frame.
There are also five topics that globalist researchers focussed more on form the start of this debate. The first phenomena that "drew researchers' attention from the 1970s" was: first the emergence of globalized economy; which involved "new systems of production, finance and consumption, and world-wide economic intergration. The second phenomena was the "new transnational/global cultural patterns, practices and flows, plus the idea of global culture(s). The third was the "global political processes, which invloved the rise of new authority structures. The fourth was the "unprecedented multi-directional movement of people arounf the world." This pattern involved the a new transnational migration, identities, and communities. And the last phenomena was a "new social hierarchies", forms of inequality, and domination around the world which was also in the whole global sysytem.
Although these are the main topic that globalist researchers focused on from the beginning, there are new variety of topics that has dealt with effects of globalizations in our society.
These topics may include: Theories of global capitalism that involvs the transnational corporation which is the "most important institution for transnational practices TNPs; Transnational Capital Class TCC for political TNPs." And other theories like: "theories of network society" "theories of space, place and globalization, "theories of transnationality & transnationalism etc. . .
The significance of this weeks reading is how Robinson used different theorietical aspects to show how globalization has effected the global social world in the long run since its origin.
