1. Consider a time in which you were involved in a social dilemma. How did you respond to the problem?
2. Review and critique the laboratory games that have been used to assess responses in social dilemmas identified in the reading (e.g. The Prisoner's Dilemma, the Trucking game). What are their strengths and the limitations?
3. Discuss an example of a person who is a member of a social group and has used social creativity strategies in an attempt to improve his or her self-image. What were the strategies, and were they successful?
respond to 3 students.
1. (I work for a bank in their cardholder services and I am basically the evening supervisor, since I am the most experienced on shift)
My coworker had a highly upset cardholder, who was yelling and saying nasty stuff to her. The cardholder requested to talk to someone else. My coworker begged me to take the call. It was time to clock out and I was about to shut down all of my systems; however, I have a professional and ethical code I follow throughout life, so I took the call.
The woman immediately goes off on me, when I got on to the phone. I told her that I understood her frustrations of her card being declined and she yells at me telling me that I don't know anything. I calmly asked for her name and information. She yelled at me, again, because my coworker had already asked the lady the same questions a few times. I remained professional. She began telling me how she had two kids, who were running throughout the store and she just wanted to make the purchase and leave.
Being a mother and psychology major, I jumped on this opportunity. I immediately said 'I completely understand. Let's get you pulled up in my systems so you can get those kiddos home' Her entire attitude changed. I began to say how my children would take advantage of a frustrating situation as well. She laughed and the conversation went from pure hell to quite pleasant.
Being chewed out is not fun, by any means, but by putting yourself in the other person's shoes and remaining calm are the keys to any social dilemma.
2. I really enjoyed the Trucking Game experiment. (maybe I'm just a bit of a nerd)
By using different variables to manipulate the 'route', the social dilemma was created. Two 'truck companies' were given two paths they could travel. One was a shared road that would get them to their destinations faster, but again they would have to share with the opposing company. Their other choice was road that was not shared; however, it would take longer, was dangerous and would cut their profit. Another variable was giving either one company or both companies access gates that only that company could control.
Strengths of the Trucking Game placed different variables that would cause social dilemmas. The experiment was designed to show how people responded to social dilemmas and the experiment successfully showed this. The Trucking Game had a variety of variables; however, the Trucking Game did not change the environment. People act differently when placed in certain environments. The Trucking Game could have had loud noises, an audience watching, etc.
3. I know, I'm taking an easy route here!
Caitlyn Jenner (formerly known as Bruce Jenner) as a person who has just announced their identification as transgender, Jenner is taking on a new sexual identity role as well as a new social group in terms of being newly divorced, no longer having minor children to care for, and transitioning into becoming a woman.
Jenner has made several public comments when he identified as a man that he did not want to let his fan base down, he cited this as a reason he did not self-disclose sooner. Perhaps, too, living in the public eye, he chose not to transition for fear of retribution to his children who were still minors.
Since Caitlyn Jenner has emerged, Jenner has granted a television interview so her words could be heard directly, not from tabloids or conjecture. Second, after the interview she allowed herself to be seen in her new apparel so as to portray a cohesive image. Next, she has participated in a documentary style tv show and has positioned herself as a spokesperson for transgendered individuals.
In light of our readings, it would appear that Bruce Jenner had to strategize how he would transition his sexual identity meanwhile maintaining his high social class status without backsliding. The transition was photographed very tastefully by a world renowned photographer which sends the message that he will maintain his high social status--not many other transgendered individuals appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. It was a public relations strategy that was very well done to maintain his self-respect.
