Project #8477 - communications

Using textbooks " Influence (5th edition) by Robert B Cialdini" and " Persuasion in Society (2nd edition) by Herbert W simons & Jean G. Jones" to answer the following questions:

  1. What is going meta? Provide two examples of successful metamoves that are not from the reading or lecture. For each example, briefly explain how the metacommunicative framing guided what could and could not be said.

  2. The power of scarcity can be increased when two conditions are present. Explain these conditions and provide a study or example from the Cialdini text that demonstrates the power of each condition.

  3. What is the name and essential features of the theory that has been used to explain reactions to censored material? How can this theory explain the L.A. riots after the first Rodney King trial?

  4. List the four different types of audiences that persuaders encounter and provide two tips (for each category) that presenters should incorporate if they hope to succeed at persuasion.

  5. Describe four issues in message design, presenting the pros and cons involved with each issue.

  6. List and define the components of cults and apply them to a “non-cult” organization like a fraternity or the military. Then, after your analysis, draw a conclusion. Is the group you discussed a “cult”? If not, why not?

  7. Discuss Molly Melching’s work in light of chapter 10 of the Simons & Jones text on persuasive campaigns. Why was Melching’s work included in the chapter as a “closing story”?

  8. Describe and discuss the ongoing debate surrounding subliminal persuasion, presenting both sides. Then, answer this question: “Does subliminal persuasion exist”? Be sure to connect your conclusion to the discussion that precedes it.

  9. Describe an instance where Mitt Romney or Barack Obama used reframing to positive (or negative) effect in their 2012 campaign. What, exactly, did the candidate say and do? What was the original frame and how was it transformed? How and why did the reframing work (or fail) to change the race?

  10. Compare and contrast the Willie Horton ad with the Reverend Wright controversy. What happened in each case? What impact did they have on the candidates who were under attack? Which candidate (Dukakis or Obama) handled the attack better and why?

  11. What is hypercommunication? How has it impacted advertising?

  12. Discuss “power” as applied to social conflicts. What forms does it take? How does it impact conflict? How should it be used appropriately in negotiation situations?

  13. Why is conflict paradoxical? Explain this concept and provide examples.

  14. . If you wanted to start a movement on campus to remove sweatshop-produced clothing from the campus store, which of the five types of movements discussed by Simons & Jones (ch. 14) would you use and why?

  15. Concerning the case study on California’s Proposition 2, what was at stake? What positive conclusion can be drawn about the outcome? What negative conclusions?
