Project #84970 - I want it all

Apiragraha , the principle of non-attachment and non-acquisitiveness, is a very important teaching in Jainism. It is illustrated by the mantra "Possessions possess us.

1. Post your personal response to this mantra, including a brief discussion of how a Jain would view American preoccupation with consumerism.

2. Jains do not deny the possibility of accumulating wealth. How does Jainism deal with the seeming contradiction to the principle of aparagraha?

3. Jainism, like Buddhism, began as a reform movement in Hinduism. It's founders did not intend to start a new religion. Discuss the role that reform movements play in religion.
