Project #85130 - Write 250 words, topic " My Secondary Discourses"

  1. Personally illuminating Gee Discussion Board –

This is the requirement.

"Gee Discussion Board: Personally Illuminating Gee’s Ideas. At least 250 words.

James Paul Gee tells us that literacy goes beyond merely reading and writing. Instead, according to Gee, being literate is about how we control our various secondary discourses. These discourses, Gee tells us, are very much related to our identities and beliefs.

Choose a secondary discourse from  own life. Did you mostly “acquire” or mostly “learn” the discourse? How so?

Compare and contrast: How does one of your secondary discourses differ from your primary discourse in terms of the language, behavior, and ideology associated with them?"

This is an example from my friend

One of the secondary discourses in my life is studying abroad. I have acquired so many things through meeting people from other countries and living in different environment form my country. There is nothing like formal direction to live in other country and meet people, so I have acquired a lot of things since I have started living in the U.S. I have “learned” English in my country and America by textbooks; however, I mostly get the sense of speaking English through my experiences, not through text books. I also bought some books how to make conversation in English; for example, how to greet to people or something like that, but those were never helpful for my real life at all. Instead of books or textbooks, I got communication skill through people who are not necessary teachers. While I am talking to my friends, classmates or boyfriend, I get the skill of conversation, and I use what I acquired to them.  Also, I acquired how to live in the U.S. as same as how I acquired how to make conversation with others. I did not even know how to ride a bus when I start living in the U.S. Therefore, I observed how people rode a bus at the first time, and I knew the process.

The differences from my primary discourse and secondary discourses are almost everything like language, culture or people, but if I pick up one, this would be environment. When I lived in Japan, I mostly “learned” many things in school, club team and work place. People were always next to me and taught something, but in here I feel like I teach something by myself and make myself understand.
