Task 1 – 30 marks

Plot summaries

Write THREE plot summaries of the stories/chapters in Swallow the Air following the model provided for the first story/chapter in your Learning Resource.

(a) Select one story/chapter from the first third of the novel, one from the second third, and one from the third. Briefly recount the events described.

(b) Outline the insights and ideas the story/chapter gives into experiences of belonging and not belonging and notions of identity, relationships, acceptance and understanding.

(c) Identify and interpret the language techniques and devices which the author uses to communicate these insights and ideas.

Write 200 words or less on each chapter.

Task 2 – 30 marks

Analysing a review

Select one of the newspaper reviews of the novel and note down the title, author and relevant bibliographical details:

(a) Discuss the reviewer’s attitude to the novel.

(b) Focus on AT LEAST THREE of the critical evaluations which the reviewer makes of the novel’s content, structure, themes and/or style. Assess and comment on the accuracy of these evaluations.

(c) Indicate whether or not you agree with the reviewer’s assessment of the novel’s value.

(d) Support your opinions by making close reference to Swallow the Air. Include examples and brief quotations where appropriate to illustrate your points.

Write 400 words or less.

Task 3 – 40 marks

Extended response

Underlying a person’s sense of belonging, of being able to call some place ‘home’ or feeling like a part of a group or a member of a family or community, is a single, uncomplicated idea – acceptance.

Do you agree with this statement? Write an extended response in which you compare the experiences of belonging and not belonging represented in THREE texts. Describe how the composer of each text has communicated ideas and experiences of belonging and not belonging.

In your response you should to refer to your prescribed text Swallow the Air AT LEAST TWO related texts of your choosing.
