Assignment 3: This assignment will demonstrate the importance of data in identifying public health issues as well as enable you to use these tools in public health inquiry. Using the U.S. Census Bureau’s guided search (http://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) database (http://www.cdc.gov/brfss/), complete the following exercise as demonstrated and practiced in class. The total assignment should include a minimum of 2 pages of writing.
- Identify a state other than Nevada. Use the US Census Bureau to write a brief description about the state. This should include:
a) the total population in the state,
b) % male, % female, % white, black, AI/AN, Asian, Native HI/other PI, other; 2 or more, Hispanic
c) the percent in rural areas and the percent in urban areas
d) mean household income, median household income, per capita income, % of all families below poverty level (all families, all fam with related children under 18)
e) commuting to work drove alone, carpooled, public trans, walked, other, worked from home
- Select one of the health outcomes or behaviors addressed in the BRFSS. Write a brief (no more than half a page) description about the issue; ie: what are the causes or risk factors, why is it an important outcome or behavior to monitor.
- Use the BRFSS database to understand the distribution of your selected disease in your selected location. How does the distribution vary based on a) age, b) income, c) education, d) ethnicity/race and gender
- List any trends you observe within each category
