Creativity and Mental Illness

**If you choose this topic to discuss, please submit your primary post as a comment on this post.

It is often said that artists and writers are touched by a bit of madness, but might "The Yellow Wallpaper" make the argument that madness springs from the inability to be expressive and creative? Consider the development of the mental disorder that increasingly consumes the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” and identify her symptoms and their possible causes. Look for textual evidence in the narrator’s description of her own condition. What differences do you observe in her opening insights and those which can be gleaned from the conclusion? Can you make a case that the narrator decompensated in “The Yellow Wallpaper” because she could not find a creative outlet?

Remember, your primary post should be 250 words or more.

Please use examples from the story to support your ideas. If you use quotes, please cite them.

Amongst Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper” the speaker is exposed to a despicable yellow wallpaper. The yellow wallpaper can symbolize what she does not have in life yet would like to have. For instance, according to The Meaning of Colors, yellow “produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy.” These are all things that the speaker does not seem to have in her personal life. Therefore, to have this yellow wallpaper reminding her every day of the things that she doesn’t enjoy, makes the speaker frustrated. In fact, she says, “The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smoldering unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight” (36). It is safe to say that it is not the wallpaper itself what she detests, but rather the specific color of it. The specific color, yellow, stimulates her mental activity, therefore stimulating her to write, something that she implies that John does not let her do when she says, “There comes John, and I must put this away, -he hates to have me write a word” (39). Furthermore, it seems to be that she does not have much control over her life at this point for, when those around her don’t take her opinion in consideration as to why she does not get better her response is “And what can one do?” (9) or “What is one to do” (12, 15). This repetition among her vocabulary implies that she is complacent, but not happy.
