Primary Discussion Response:

During the first week of the course, you chose an essay prompt and did some initial research on it.  Over the next four weeks you will be working on assignments that build an essay.  This week, you will use this discussion board to work on building your references page and analyzing the quality and reliability of your sources. You will also be responding to your classmates’ posts, offering suggestions and feedback.

Part 1:  Primary Discussion Post

For this discussion, choose three sources that you might want to use for your final essay.  You may use the source you found in Unit 1 if you choose.  In the discussion area, post the following:

  • A brief description of your chosen topic.
  • APA formatted references citation for all three of your chosen sources, listed in alphabetical order by author last name or article title if no author name is provided.
  • Brief annotation paragraph for each source, placed below the citation.  In your annotation, provide the following:
    1. A brief summary of the article
    2. Explanation as to how the article relates to the argument you will be making in your essay.
    3. An explanation as to whether or not the source you have chosen seems to be reliable, such as whether it is from a peer reviewed article, scholarly or credible website, contains up-to-date information, and was written by an expert in the field.
For help with formatting your annotated bibliography, refer to this template.

Part 2: Peer Responses

In your responses, remember to be constructive and polite when you offer feedback.  It is best to be specific.  After reviewing the main posts of your classmates’ annotations use these questions to assist you with your responses:
  • How does each source seem to relate directly to the chosen topic, and if one does not, explain why not.
  • Discuss the credibility of the chosen sources.  Do they appear to be from scholarly journals?  Are they general websites?
  • What APA formatting issues might be addressed to fix the reference entries?
